Hotel Illa D’Or Mallorca Celebrates 85th Anniversary & Completion of Major Renovation Project

Illa DorIf Agatha Christie revisited the charming hotel where she stayed in Puerto Pollensa in the 30´s and wrote about in her short story “Problem at Pollensa Bay”, she would still recognise Hotel Illa d’Or and surely approve of the changes. The hotel was one of the first to be built in this part of Mallorca in 1929 and has welcomed many memorable guests over the years from Catalan artist Joan Miró, who honeymooned there in 1929, to many of the artistic elite of European society in the pre and post-war years.

The hotel celebrates its 85th anniversary this year and reopens on 28th February after completion of a Phase two of a major renovation and refurbishment programme.  All 120 rooms and suites have been completely renovated and refurbished in a bright, contemporary style with neutral and marine tones to reflect its seafront location.  Quality designer furnishings and textiles are used whilst retaining the classic elegance for which the hotel is renowned.  Some public areas have been refurbished too.

Hotel Illa d’Or was built in 1927 as a summer villa on land bequeathed as a wedding gift in what was then a fishing area called El Moll.  Soon after it was converted to a 23 room hotel to accommodate the growing number of tourists who came to experience one of the loveliest parts of Mallorca.  It is still in the same family ownership today and has a fascinating history and many historical connections.  Several European writers and artists visited by hydroplane and were inspired by the exceptional light, stunning landscapes and crystal clear waters.   These days, it’s an easy 45 minute transfer from Palma airport.

Recognised as one of the island’s classic hotels, Hotel Illa d’Or received its new 4* Superior classification last year and received a Gold Award by the Mallorcan Tourist Board for its outstanding contribution to quality tourism for 85 years.
