Holiday Travel to Mallorca Increases in 2012

Mallorca saw a significant rise in visitors last summer as British holidaymakers reacquainted themselves with the unique charms of the island.  With Spain recently named as the top destination for summer 2013, our love affair with  this Mediterranean gem shows no sign of abating.    At just over 2 hours flying time from most UK airports, it’s easy to see why Mallorca remains one of our favourite destinations.

Here’s a news update from four hotels offering visitors a chance to combine a beach and city break almost all year round, with free transfers between the four hotels.

Hotel Bon Sol

Hotel Bon Sol Resort & Spa

The 4* Hotel Bon Sol Resort & Spa in Illetas is celebrating its 60th anniversary and is planning a programme of anniversary events throughout the year, including weekend gala dinners for guests.

Sixty years after his father, Antonio, outlined his sustainable vision for the hotel, Martin & Lorraine Xamena operate a carbon-neutral treeplanting project in Costa Rica.    Started in 2006, the project now covers two forest areas with over  240,000 trees (equivalent area to 250 football fields!) and provides 6 months’ work a year for 30 local families.

One of Mallorca’s classic hotels, and with a repeat guest percentage of 82%, Bon Sol prides itself on excellent service and attention to detail to ensure that every guest has the best possible holiday experience.  There are excellent leisure and dining facilities, a well-established luxury spa, 3 swimming pools and a sandy cove, complimentary yoga & tai-chi classes and a friendly children’s club operates in school holidays at no extra charge. Classic Double / twin rates from low season €99 to high season €140 per person on half-board basis including tax  and service charges.

Classic Collection Holidays (0800 294 9318) offers 3 nights from £527 ( or 7 nights from £924 per person) both in April,  based on 2 adults sharing a classic room on a half board basis and includes return flights and private transfers. www.classic-collection.co.uk

Hotel Tres

Hotel Tres

This 4* hotel in Palma is a stunning conversion of a 16th century palace in the heart of Palma.  Just a stone’s throw from excellent shopping, restaurants, tapas bars and cultural sites, it has a well-deserved reputation as a relaxing, designer retreat combining original features with contemporary interiors.

The hotel has undergone some refurbishment & decoration for this year, including a gym area with a range of exercise equipment and a newly furbished meeting room set up for 10 guests, and renovated patio area with new designer furniture.  A sauna and plunge pool on the roofdeck offer further facilities for relaxing and soaking up the skyline views of Palma and the Son Seu Cathedral.

A range of enhanced customer services help guests make the most of their stay including a concierge service to order gifts and services prior to arrival and a  free I-phone app to plan your visit.

The emphasis at Hotel Tres is all about relaxed elegance and informal sophistication.   There are 41 spacious rooms and suites with Kingsize beds and modern artwork, some with private terraces offering fine views of Palma.  The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and is open all year with doubles from €215 with breakfast.

Hotel Tres’s sister property, Hotel Cort, will open at Plaza Cort 1st June 2013 (TBC).   Offering the same laid-back luxury and superb customer service, the all-suites hotel (16 in total) is a small, intimate former historic residence with superb interior design.  This new hotel will offer guests a new experience in a unique location in the centre of Palma with a stunning restaurant & bar area. www.hotelcort.com

Hotel Dalt Mirada

Hotel Dalt Murada

Tucked away in a quiet street right in the old quarter of Palma, this charming 16th century manor house has been in the Moragues family for generations but opened as a hotel in 2002.

A restructuring project over the last two years has reconfigured rooms to offer 21 comfortable en-suite double rooms with traditional Mallorquin furniture and quirky family heirlooms, but modern touches such as satellite TV and air conditioning.  A spacious rooftop terrace offers a space for guests to sit and relax with a glass of wine and savour the fine views of the Cathedral.  Double rooms (breakfast not included) from €120 (tax included).

Sister Property, Casa Padrina, is a few minutes walk away and offers six cosy en-suite rooms with a kitchenette for guests’ use and ‘remote’ reception services.  Rates from €87 room only. See www.hotelcasapadrina.com

Hotel Mar I Vent

Hotel Mar I Vent

This charming, small hotel is in the wine-producing village of Banyalbufar, in the UNESCO designated Tramuntana mountains.  Very popular with walkers and cyclists (the GB Olympic Cycling team and Bradley Wiggins spend a lot of time  training in the area, where the SKY Cycling team have their base), it makes an excellent base for exploring the landscapes and rich cultural diversity of villages such as Valldemossa and Deia.

Three generations of the Vives family have welcomed guests to this comfortable hotel where the accent is on a warm welcome and traditional Mallorquin cuisine, using local produce wherever possible.  All 29 rooms have stunning sea views and the pool terrace overlooks the sea – the sunsets are legendary here!   Hiking routes, excursions and several golf courses are available nearby and the hotel also has a tennis court and bikes for guests’ use and happily provides maps, routes and picnic lunches and, of course, expert local knowledge.  Double room rates from €98 with breakfast.
